More Clarity for a Holiday Weekend

first_imgRecommended resource: Interviews from Phillip E. Johnson taken in his prime, c. 1991.  After his book Darwin on Trial effectively launched the ID Movement to prominence, Berkeley law professor Dr. Johnson took questions about his ideas on neo-Darwinism, intelligent design and creationism. He separates fact from fiction and issue from propaganda in these incisive answers to issues raised by his book. Uploaded as an 8-part playlist on YouTube by Steven Meyer, each 1-4 minute episode is a model of how to focus on the heart of the issue at hand in a winsome way.Johnson’s famous debate with atheist William Provine (1994), who died in September 2015, is also available on YouTube. Shortly afterward, Johnson, now with aging voice but no loss of mental acuity, remembered his worthy interlocutor in a podcast for ID the Future and a written remembrance on Evolution News & Views.Recommending this link does not imply endorsement on all points, just that it is worthy of consideration.(Visited 13 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

South African Tourism partners with Visa

first_img15 November 2012South African Tourism (SA Tourism) and global payments technology company Visa have signed an agreement that will see the two organisations working closely together to promote the country’s tourist attractions to an international audience. The “South Africa and Visa Welcomes You” campaign will seek to amplify SA Tourism’s existing efforts to promote South Africa as a travel destination for tourists and promote the use of Visa cards by visitors. The agreement was a natural progression in the company’s existing role in the global tourism industry, Visa South Africa’s country manager, Mandy Lamb, said in a statement on Wednesday.“South Africa remains a firm favourite among tourists from various parts of the world because of the country’s diverse tourist attractions.‘Tourism key to unlocking growth’“As a major contributor to South Africa’s gross domestic product, the tourism sector is key to unlocking economic growth and our aim is to put efforts behind articulating South Africa’s advanced electronic payment network, which supports payments by Visa cards,” Lamb said.Visa’s latest Tourism Outlook on South Africa report – released in September – showed that tourist arrivals to South Africa rose 3% in 2011, despite tough global economic conditions. The country also recorded an increase of 10.5% in the number of arrivals during the first six months of 2012 compared to the same period last year. There has been a notable increase in the number of tourist inflows from neighbouring African countries such Angola, Mozambique and one of Africa’s economic powerhouses, Nigeria. The alliance would see the two organisations combining their strengths to promote South Africa as the destination of choice and provide useful tips to tourists on how to manage their travel expenses safely and conveniently, said SA Tourism’s regional director for Africa, Phumi Dhlomo.“Our relationship with Visa is of a symbiotic nature and we see it as a long-term venture that will benefit the South African economy and position the country as Africa’s prime tourist destination,” he said.Over the coming months, Visa and SA Tourism will embark on a variety of activities geared towards promoting tourism and showing the convenience of card usage while in South Africa. The two entities plan to support the retailers’ end-of-year sales in January 2013 with point-of-sales visibility and card activation campaigns to drive visitors’ in-store. This will be used as a platform to promote the South African retail sector during the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon). The Visa and SA Tourism alliance will also look at further strengthening inflows from emerging markets such as China and India and traditional markets like the United Kingdom, United States and Germany.Source: SANews.gov.zalast_img read more

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The National Biodiesel Board is offering scholarships for students interested in attending the National Biodiesel Conference & Expo, Jan. 22 to 25 in Fort Worth, Texas. The application process for no cost registration, travel scholarships, biodiesel poster presentations and even a shot at the podium is open for members of the Next Generation Scientists for Biodiesel. The program is intended to foster professional relationships between budding and established scientists, share accurate information and increase collaboration with academia and the biodiesel industry.Student opportunities include a poster session on biodiesel-related research or activities, a student-led breakout session to present their research, a preconference biodiesel educational overview and a mentoring session with prominent biodiesel scientists.Last year, about 30 students attended the event from schools including Missouri University of Science and Technology, Clemson University, University of Iowa, and New Castle University in the United Kingdom. Many of the students, who came from a wide range of disciplines, noted the impact the event made on them.“Having individual scientists take time to talk to me about my research was so rewarding,” said Christopher Carrie, a student at Rowan University in New York who attended in 2017. “It was a humbling experience to listen to the impact each scientist had on the biodiesel industry and to hear their closing words of wisdom. My passion for renewable energy has started; it is time to get to work.”The National Biodiesel Board, U.S. Department of Agriculture Biodiesel Education Program, United Soybean Board and the National Biodiesel Foundation sponsor the scholarships, which amount to a $1,200 conference registration and a $600 travel reimbursement. We know there are two tough moments in sports, trading a player and when a player leaves in free agency. We all have to prepare ourselves for everything. I think we’ve built this trust in a way that whatever it is, we would have prepared ourselves.”Some Raptors fans were excited at a report Leonard bought property in Toronto but he said Sunday that it wasn’t true. There’s a lot of money available and plenty of possibilities.LeBron James would love to lure talent to the Los Angeles Lakers and both Thompson and Leonard are from Los Angeles.Reports and speculation link Durant to the New York Knicks or Los Angeles Clippers and Leonard or Durant, or both, to the Brooklyn Nets, maybe with Irving.‘Nothing is guaranteed’Clippers coach Doc Rivers incurred a $50,000 fine from the NBA for comparing Leonard to retired Chicago Bulls icon Michael Jordan.“I don’t really think my legacy is going to ever reach the potential of Michael Jordan,” Leonard said. “I just want to play and let people remember I played hard at both ends of the floor, I was a winner, and that’s basically it.”The Knicks can be the big spenders in free agency with nearly $73 million available while the Clippers have nearly $60 million and the Nets about $54 million. The Warriors can offer Thompson a five-year deal for $190 million, better terms than rivals, but that hasn’t stopped Thompson from fielding questions about his legacy.“I just try to enjoy the journey,” he said. “You wish to have no end in sight, but everything that’s great always comes to an end. So whether that’s tomorrow or four years from now, you never know. Raptors president Masai Ujiri, who is from Nigeria, says regardless of how the finals turn out, the trust built over the journey will be critical in Toronto’s chances of persuading Leonard to stay.“We’re going to be us,” Ujiri said. “Kawhi Leonard is a superstar and we’re going to treat him like a superstar, but we’re also going to do all the natural things I think will help us get to that level to convince Kawhi that this is the place for him.“The future conversations I’ve had with Kawhi are about the Golden State Warriors and that’s his mindset, what’s at hand right now, what’s the job right now. And the job right now is to beat the Golden State Warriors.”Ujiri realizes the deal must work for the club and Leonard, who has had to adjust to life in a new nation.“When he sees with the city, the fan base, basketball, coaching, everything almost has to come together naturally,” Ujiri said.ADVERTISEMENT “That’s the beauty of life. You just got to go out and enjoy every minute with the group of guys you got, because in professional sports nothing is ever guaranteed.” View commentslast_img read more
