Relive These Wacky Miitomo Creations Before Nintendo Shuts It Down

Image: @shabu2oishii<><> It seems like only yesterday that Nintendo shocked the world by finally announcing its plans for smartphone game development in partnership with DeNA. The first “game” out of the gate was the bizarre social networking app/meme creator Miitomo. But despite a wonderfully weird first few weeks, the app ultimately failed to catch fire, and Nintendo pivoted to developing mobile games starring their beloved characters like Mario, Animal Crossing villagers, and Fire Emblem anime wives. Now, about two years after its launch, Nintendo has announced that Miitomo is soon shutting down. Some functionality has already ceased, like in-app purchases, and on May 9 all features in the app will stop, so salvage all the Miis you can. We’re still in mourning for Nintendo’s other strange, dead, Mii-based social network Miiverse, so we’re not taking the news of Miitomo’s demise very well. That’s why we’re looking back on these wacky Miitomo memes from launch week and remembering a time when we thought this app might last forever.Nintendo’s foray into iPhone apps with Miitomo is fascinating for several reasons. First, the company publishing software on a machine they didn’t make is unprecedented. Second, deciding to avoid any of their iconic characters was a ballsy move. Third and weirdest of all: it’s not a game. If you haven’t played it yet, Miitomo is sort of like a social network, where you link up with friends and share answers to questions, all presented by the cartoonish Mii characters first seen on the Wii.It’s tough to say how much of a lifespan Miitomo will have, but with three million downloads so far, it’s certainly the thing of the moment. People are using the Miifoto feature — which lets you take shots of your Mii and others in a panoply of poses, overlay text, and so on — for some pretty ridiculous portraits. Here’s a gallery of some of the funniest things that went down over Miitomo‘s first weekend. Somehow we doubt that Nintendo predicted many of the Miitomo shenanigans we saw there. As the program grows, new clothes get added, and new features rolled out, we’re sure that the wacky pics will flow like spice.
