first_imgYu Televentures, a firm started by Micromax in 2014, on Tuesday launched Yunicorn. The phone, which sports a slicker design compared to the earlier Yu phones, will be exclusively sold at Flipkart, at least in the initial weeks after the launch. The phone initially has been priced at Rs 12,999. After one month since launch, the phone will be available for Rs 13,499. The phone will be sold via flash sale today at 2PM.The Yunicorn, as the name suggests, is a phone that focuses more on the beauty rather than brawn, also possible because earlier when Yu tried to chase the pure performance with the Yutopia it didn’t turn out too well. The Yunicorn has an aluminium body and curved glass screen and it looks rather well-made. Although, it also looks starkly similar to the iPhone and many of other iPhone-lookalike devices like Meizu Note 3. The impression is particularly reinforced due to the fact that the Yunicorn has a physical home button similar to that the one used in the iPhone. the home button houses a finger-print scanner inside it.Inside its metal body, the Yunicorn has fairly decent hardware. It uses MediaTek P10 (MT6755) processor and has 4GB RAM. The phone comes with 32GB internal storage. It supports dual-SIM feature although one of the slots is hybrid slot and if you use a microSD card in the phone then you will be able to use only one SIM card. The Yunicorn has a 5.5-inch screen with FullHD display. It has 13-megapixel camera on the back, along with dual-tone flash. The phone sports a 5-megapixel camera on the front.advertisementUnlike the earlier Yu phones, the Yunicorn doesn’t use CyanogenOS. The deal that Yu and Cyanogen Inc had signed for exclusive software is over and now Yu is using its own software. This software, which is result of Yu’s project highway, is currently based on Android Lollipop. But Yu says that the phone will be updated to Android Marshmallow in the coming days. The Yu calls the software inside the Yunicorn Steroids.According to the company the software in the Yunicorn maintains the look and feel of the stock Android whenever possible and augments the areas where the company feels it can improve Android. The Steroids also come with the Around Yu features which integrates services like booking cabs and the ordering food into the core software. For Yu, the Yunicorn is a very important launch. The company had a lot of momentum last year but its last phone Yutopia, which was an ambitious release, find few takers. While the phone had very powerful hardware inside it, Yu promised premium experience with the Yutopia, something that it couldn’t offer due to the software issues in the CyanogenOS. It is possible that the problems with the Yutopia may have hastened the end of Yu’s partnership with Cyanogen Inc.The Yunicorn will compete with the likes of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, the Lenovo Z1 and the Moto G4 Plus. Also read: Yu Yunicorn quick review: Slick design is the cool factorlast_img
