Newman pitched eight innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits with nine strikeouts and two walks. Her record moved to 5-5 on the season.   Northwestern answered in the seventh. Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.), who had allowed just two hits going into the frame, gave up a leadoff double. After a groundout that moved the runner over to third, the Wildcats tied the game with a single to centerfield. Newman retired the next hitter as the game went to extra innings, Drake’s first of the season. Story Links Watch Live In the win over Grand Canyon, Nicole Timmons (Davenport, Iowa) started and pitched well in 6.1 innings. Timmons, who improved to 7-5 with the win, allowed one run on four hits with one strikeout and two walks. She pitched out of two jams, once in the second inning when Grand Canyon had runners on second and third with one, and later in the fourth when the Lopes loaded the bases but only scored once. In every other inning besides the seventh, Timmons retired the side in order. In the seventh, Newman came in after Timmons hit Grand Canyon’s second batter with one out. Newman made fast work of the Lopes’ hitters retiring both on just 10 total pitches for her third save of the season. At the plate, Buie had three hits while Pena, who went 2-for-3, drove in one run and her stolen base of second in the first inning led to Macy Johnson (Winterset, Iowa) being able to score from third base for the Bulldogs’ second run.
