West Florida Salvages Game Three

first_img April 7, 2007Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. – In the final GSC home game of the season for 18th ranked West Florida (31-12, 7-5), the Argonauts soundly defeated 28th ranked West Alabama (28-12, 9-3) today, 12-6. The win was spirited by a nine-run third inning. West Florida dropped two out of three games to West Alabama in the series, and are two games out of first place in the GSC East.West Alabama jumped on UWF in similar fashion to the first two games. They scored twice in the first on RBI doubles off UWF starter Brett McCullough (Cantonment, Fla. / Tate HS) by Todd Rea and Clint Moody. In the bottom of the inning, UWF answered with two runs. With one out, Kyle DeBos (Panama City, Fla. / Gulf Coast CC) reached on a throwing error by shortstop Clark Humber. Bo Williams (Ocala, Fla. / Pensacola JC) was hit by a pitch on the next at bat. DeBos looked to be thrown out trying to steal third base, but third baseman Rob Dahlberg could not handle catcher Jake DeRoy’s throw. Not only was DeBos safe but he scored on the error. Williams later scored on an RBI single by Logan Hundley (Gulf Breeze, Fla. / Gulf Breeze HS) off UWA starter Stephen Barnett.The Argos distanced themselves in the third inning by scoring nine runs on six hits, two hit batsmen, an error, and a walk. Williams led off the inning with his sixth homer of the season to straight away center field. Peter Antoske (Olmsted Township, Ohio / St. Edward HS), Hundley and Wallace each had two-run scoring doubles off UWA reliever Brandon Dill. Daniel Jones (Wetumpka, Ala. / Gulf Coast CC) and Jason Kohl (Cedar Rapids, Iowa / Pensacola JC) each added RBI singles.West Florida led 12-3 going into the ninth inning. The Tigers quickly scored three runs without recording an out off UWF reliever Kit Powell (Daphne, Ala. / Faulkner State CC). Dahlberg doubled in two runs and Rea had an RBI single. Phil Lawhorn (Virginia Beach, Fla. / Pensacola JC) was summoned from the bullpen with one out and runners on first and second. He got Jody Morgan to fly out and struck out James Guilliams to seal the win.Brett McCullough (6-1) pitched seven strong innings. He allowed three runs on six hits, one walk and he hit five batters. The two teams combined for nine hit batsmen. Barnett (3-3) suffered the loss in just 2 2/3 innings. The Tigers used four pitchers.Hundley went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a double. Huggins was 2-for-4, and Wallace was 2-for-5 with two RBI and two doubles. Kohl was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double. Rea led UWA by going 4-for-5 with three RBI.West Florida resumes conference play next weekend at Alabama-Huntsville. They play a double header on Saturday at 1 pm.
