Last Saturday, October 28th, Boulder, CO fans had some Halloween fun with The Main Squeeze came to town. The soul band set up shop at the Fox Theatre, hitting fans with a Halloween celebration that kept them grooving into the night.One of the highlights from the show was a sit-in by 15-year-old guitarist Jaden Carlson, who joined the Squeeze for an extended run of songs. Carlson would come in for a live take on the Stranger Things theme, followed by “Luke’s Theme” and “Tank X-ing” during the set. Three days ago, Kendrick Lamar posted a mysterious teaser video that saw him hint at a 12/16 date in Brooklyn with American Express. The next morning, Billboard revealed that the seven-time Grammy Award winner and master of all things Hip-Hop would be performing a secret show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg the following day. The show sold out immediately.Lamar’s partnership with AmEx comes at the end of another hugely successful year for the rap phenomenon, who won five out of eleven nominations at this year’s Grammy Awards for To Pimp A Butterfly, coming after two wins for good kid, m.A.A.d city. The Compton native made even bigger strides in his fame when he released untitled unmastered. earlier this year documenting a collection of unreleased demos that originated during the Butterfly recording sessions. This album came in the middle of the night with no title, no artwork, no song names, completely untouched. It was a brilliant masterpiece from the bottom up.So when news broke that one of the most prolific artists in Hip-Hop would be playing a small venue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, people freaked. “It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to play for a room like this,” he said, after a rip-roaring “Levitate” to open up the one-set performance. The Wesley Theory was tight, with a simple set up for drums, bass, guitar, and keys. In a career-spanning setlist, every song felt like the anthem for the night. From the early day’s “A.D.H.D” and “Swimming Pool (Drank) to “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe” to his newer, universally acclaimed hits like “King Kunta”, “Alright”, and songs off the untitled unmastered. Every single person in that room had a moment with themselves. I’d estimate less than 300 people were lucky enough to stand before King Kendrick during this intimate performance. The stage was built further out than normal at the 550-cap room, and production staff took up half the banisters in all four corners. The entire show was filmed, with over 35 minutes of it shared through Kendrick’s Facebook Live.The music was for everyone, drawing from jazz, funk, soul, and spoken word. As he mentions in the beginning clip of the Facebook Live video, Kendrick often incorporates freestyle in his rap verses. We all watched with eyes wide open as he’d lock in to certain people in the crowd and go against the recorded lyrics. It was pure and heavy art, music, and improvisation.Toward the end of his set, that we wished would last forever, the master went against the script and invited fans to the stage to freestyle over beats made by the band. At random, he picked three people to join him and his band. The first person did not do well, and was consequently booed off the stage. The second person did a fantastic job, going back and forth with Kendrick like a real pro. It was obvious that his dreams were coming true before us all, and for that he earned enormous applause. The third person went a cappella, digging deep into the poetic field of dark, political topics that Kendrick is so well known to explore in his own music; his name is Kemba and can be found on YouTube. All three of these performances are also included in the Facebook Live performance below.Kendrick Lamar closed the night with “i”, which won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance. From beginning to end, the performance was a testament to the truth. Closing out what seems to be one of the most confusing, ratchet years of our lifetime, Kendrick continuously uses his spotlight to open the doors to conversations of social grievances and political impurities. His ability to unabashedly confront these issues with such profound modes of artistic expression is a revitalizing reality that demands reprise. 2017 will inevitably bring a revolution in musical messages as we face big changes in our country’s morale. When art imitates life, in these tumultuous times, we should all be sure to consume it. Yale University has announced a multi-day event, bringing together scholars, musicians, filmmakers, artists, journalists, and students for discussion, critical listening, and musical performance, in examining the music, careers, and lives of David Bowie and Prince. Dubbed Blackstar Rising & The Purple Reign: Celebrating the Legacies of David Bowie and Prince will culminate with a performance by TV On The Radio on the final day.Set to take place from January 25th – 28th, the event “will examine the pathbreaking innovations of these two remarkable musicians, and explore the legacies of two artists who recognized the ways that popular music can create liberating spaces where audacious cultural and social changes and transformations might flourish. At the time of the sessions that eventually became The Hitchhiker, Neil Young was slowly emerging from one of the darkest periods of his personal and musical life. Afraid of getting type cast as an acoustic lightweight, he had embraced the use of heavy-rock instrumentation, pushing away a fair chunk of his fan base from his Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Harvest period. Coupled with a melancholy mood permeating his life and music that brought on by the death of former Crazy Horse bandmate Danny Whitten, at the time, Young was clearly working through a sea-change in his personal philosophy.The opening song of Hitchhiker, “Pocahontas,” is familiar to fans of Rust Never Sleeps, but this version is infinitely more intimate than any version previously known. Young was very aware of the painful history of the native populations in the Americas and likely identified with their loss of identity. At the time of the song’s writing, these issues were once again on the minds of many Americans, and Young used his trademark nasal vocals to decry American Indians’ treatment and losses.The following tune, “Powderfinger,” continued the vision of forceful loss of culture. The uncertainty of the words is palpable and is a stunning contrast to his innate comfort on the vocals and guitar. On “Captain Kennedy,” his simple percussive taps on the hollow body of his guitar are a powerful touch that echoes the heartbeat and that fade as the protagonist faces his fate. The occasional chuckles and comments before the beginning of these tracks offer an interesting insight into Young’s mood during the recording session as well, like the self-starting thought at the start of “Hawaii.” “Give Me Strength” is the clearest picture of Young’s low emotional ebb, serving as a naked look at his disconnection. The raw nature of the track is part song, part longing for hope.By the time title track “Hitchhiker” rolls around, he seems to accept his place as a transitional force in the lives of everyone around him. With a painful divorce recently completed and a growing alienation from his friends and family, Young seemed in danger of fading away into a drug addled haze. The songs he wrote and recorded for Hitchhiker were clearly him realizing the dangers he faced and repudiating them with all the artistic fight he could muster. While fear of pigeon-holing prevented the release of The Hitchhiker at that point in his career, hearing them now is a wonderful insight into Young’s mindset at the time and moving forward. Though he was loathe to coast on his past successes, he was more than capable of making truly meaningful music in his older styles. That Young decided to fight against creative and personal stagnation and gave us one of the artist’s angriest and most seminal works. Luckily for all of us, we are now gifted with the opportunity to look at what might have been as well as what was. For his thirty-eighth solo record, The Hitchhiker, Neil Young decided to go old school—literally. All the tracks featured on the acoustic album were recorded in a single day in 1976 and have languished in archives ever since. Though some of these tracks were reworked and appeared on later albums, such as Young’s seminal Rust Never Sleeps, the songs were never heard in their original acoustic format—that is, until now. The reasons why this material ended up collecting dust for decades is almost as interesting as the music itself. It’s certainly a rare occasion for Joe Russo and Marco Benevento to reunite as a duo. While the Joe Russo’s Almost Dead bandmates have mostly dedicated their time to the Grateful Dead-inspired band, as Benevento tours his own band throughout the year, the drummer and keyboardist reunited for their fourth show this year after a six year hiatus on Friday night. Suwannee Hulaween served as the perfect setting for this reunion, even bringing former collaborator Mike Gordon to the stage for a set-closing “Scratchitti”.The Benevento Russo Duo made an unexpected come-back when they played a surprise show at a small club in Brooklyn, NY at the Threes Brewing in 2016. Having not played since 2010, the show marked the first of four that would take place in the year since. While they were once a touring machine, bringing Mike Gordon along for the ride in 2005 and then Trey Anastasio in 2006, the Duo always remained the key ingredient of the special sauce.During their performance at Suwannee Hulaween, the Benevento Russo Duo welcomed the Phish bassist for an appropriate “Scratchitti”–an original that’s been in rotation since the band’s inception in 2004, and the go-to for Mike Gordon sit-ins. As JamBase notes, the trio hadn’t shared the stage under this moniker since 2008, and with Mike Gordon’s band in 2009–though the end of this video indicates that it’s been eleven years since they’d played that together. Following a successful Tumble Down, with a surprise appearance from United States Senator and 2016 presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders, Vermont jammers Twiddle has announced a new pair of New Year’s Eve shows set to take place on Sunday, December, 30th, and Monday, December, 31st, starting at the Paradise Rock Club, and moving to the House of Blues Boston.As the announcement notes, a very limited number of VIP two-day tickets including sound check viewing and meet and greet for the Paradise Rock Club show on 12/30, early-entry for NYE, VIP-exclusive viewing area on NYE, VIP laminate, commemorative pin, and a signed poster, are available for the two-night run now on the ticketing website. Tickets for the shows go on sale to the public on Friday, August 10th, at 10 a.m. (ET). The band makes a special note that only people that have bought a ticket to the NYE show will be emailed a password to purchase tickets to the Paradise Rock Club show on Friday, August, 10th.The newly announced NYE comes on the heels of a heavy fall tour on the road for Twiddle. Load remaining images Last Saturday night, Eric Krasno joined Lettuce, Oteil Burbridge, Bob Weir, John Mayer, and more for a Jerry Garcia Band tribute set for the ages at LOCKN’, performing for the tens of thousands in attendance as well as countless more via webcast. Last night, less than one week later, Krasno was back in action for a totally different kind of performance at New York’s intimate Rockwood Music Hall.Billed as Eric Krasno & Friends Unplugged, the evening’s band included a pair of his Eric Krasno Band cohorts, guitarist Danny Mayer and vocalist Mary Corso, as well as keyboardist Eric Finland, who played with Krasno’s E3 Organ Trio earlier this year. Percussionist Ben Marino, one of Finland’s frequent collaborators, rounded out the lineup. As Krasno tells Live For Live Music, Marino came highly recommended by Finland. “Ben was so good. I met him 3 hours before the show… He’s playing the Wormtown Festival with us coming up.”The band worked through a selection of songs from 2014’s Blood From A Stone in addition to acoustic readings of a pair of covers that also appeared during last week’s LOCKN’ JGB celebration with Lettuce: Smokey Robinson and the Miracles classic “I Second That Emotion” and Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter favorite “They Love Each Other”. In addition to making mention of the LOCKN’ set, Krasno spoke about an experience visiting Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi‘s house, reminiscing about how he landed on the idea for Tedeschi Trucks Band‘s “Calling Out To You” on one of Derek’s open-tuned guitars before delivering a tender rendition of the tune.The show also included the debut of a new original song, a stoically heart-wrenching lament called “Carry My Name”, which Krasno wrote as part of a new concept album he currently has in the works.
