PNO Media loses 1.8% of return due to interest hedge

first_imgThe €4.2bn media pension fund PNO said it lost 1.8 percentage points of its 4.5% return on investments due to a 50% interest hedge on its liablities, following rising interest rates last year. It closed 2013 with a funding just over the required minimum of 105% – meaning the scheme is still at risk, the board said in its annual report. It concluded that, as a result, indexation before 2017 was unlikely, with inflation compensation currently in arrears of 17.5%.With a yield of 13%, equity was PNO Media’s best performing asset class. The scheme chiefly attributed the under-performance of 0.8 percentage point to disappointing performance of investments in the Far East, as well an under-weight in Japanese equity, which performed well. In contrast to high returns of equity developed markets – European small caps delivered 37% – the media scheme incurred losses on investments in Latin America and Asia, following disappointed growth and a drop in local currencies. It reported a 2.7% loss on its fixed income investments – an out-performance of 1.1% – with the underlying portfolios showing mixed results.Dutch mortgages and credit generated 7.3% and 3.2% respectively. However, the pension fund lost 8% on its emerging markets bonds, while its investments in euro-denominated bonds delivered -5.9%, following rising interest rates, it said.Property investments – in non-listed residential and retail funds, chiefly in the Netherlands and other Western Europe – returned 0.6%.PNO Media further attributed the modest 1.5% yield of its infrastructure holdings to the addition of two new funds during their (expensive) start up phase.Private equity – in a joint portfolio with the €12.6bn railways scheme SPF – produced 6% last year, it said.PNO Media’s board indicated that it had decided to slightly decrease the strategic weighting of emerging market equity, property, private equity and credit, in favour of developed country equity, mortgages and government bonds.Last year, it reduced the pensions contribution from 19% to 17.6% of the salary, following lower pension costs, triggered by a decrease of the yearly pensions accrual as well as the rise of the official retirement age to 67.PNO Media reported administration costs of 220 euro per participant, and said it had spent 0.72% and 0.16% of its assets respectively on asset management and transactions. The pension fund has 15,610 active participants, 8,930 pensioners and 32,225 affiliated with 465 companies.last_img read more

Fruit wines to cost less in Maharashtra

first_imgFruit wines will be cheaper in the State. The Maharashtra government on Wednesday announced a cut in excise duty on fruit wines, except those made of grapes and mead, to ₹1 per bulk litre from the earlier 100% of manufacturing cost. The decision to reduce excise duty will be applicable to wines made of Indian blackberry, chickoo, banana, red dates, cashew apples and conkerberry and is likely to benefit horticulturists in the Konkan and in tribal areas.Prior to the decision, the wine manufacturers paid 100% excise duty on the manufacturing cost. As a result, the wines were costlier than soft alcoholic drinks such as beer and grape wine. “We have now reduced it to a negligible amount. It will boost the industry and consumers will benefit,” said Chandrashekhar Bawankule, State Excise Minister.A 330 ml beer bottle costs anywhere between ₹150 and ₹180 while table wine of 750 ml is available in the ₹250 to ₹ 400 range. Due to the cost difference, the wine industry in the State was suffering, said the minister. “Only four new businessmen joined the industry in the past two years. This decision will help entrepreneurs as well as farmers,” said the minister.Meanwhile, the State Excise Department earned a revenue of ₹25,323 crore in financial year 2018-19. In 2016-17, the State witnessed a 10% growth in revenues. In the next two years, the growth was 9% and 16.5% respectively.Decentralisation of responsibilities and ease of doing business through the online medium has helped the government with the excise department’s functioning, the minister said. “One of the reasons for an increase in the department’s revenue is the ease of doing business mechanism, adopted in issuing permits and licences in manufacturing as well as alcohol sale,” said Mr. Bawankule.last_img read more

Former Rutgers QB Ryan Hart Calls Out Kyle Flood’s Decision To Switch Quarterbacks At Halftime

first_imgRutgers is in control of its season opener today, leading FCS Norfolk State 42-13 in the third quarter in Piscataway. It’s been a rough week for the Scarlet Knights, with five players arrested and later dismissed, and four more players suspended for the first half of today’s game. One of the players punished for the first half was quarterback Chris Laviano, who spent the entire off-season in a battle for the starting job with LSU transfer Hayden Rettig. Laviano’s suspension, for breaking curfew and using a fake ID, made Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood’s decision easy, as Rettig started this afternoon and played well in the first half. He completed 9-of-11 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown and rushed for another score. Somewhat surprisingly, Flood elected to begin the second half with Laviano under center. It’s a choice that seems to indicate Laviano originally won the competition and Rettig only started because of circumstance. Or maybe Flood just wanted give both guys a shot. Whatever the reasoning, former Rutgers quarterback Ryan Hart was not happy with the move.  hart tweetsTwitter/ @RyanHart13Hart played for the Scarlet Knights from 2002-05. During his senior season, Flood was an assistant under Greg Schiano. He subsequently tweeted that he still supported the embattled coach despite the decision, but he clearly did not approve of it.For what it’s worth, Laviano has connected with wide receiver Leonte Carroo for a pair of third-quarter touchdowns. Looks like there could be a QB controversy in New Jersey.last_img read more

By the numbers Ohio State starts slow finishes strong against Maryland

Redshirt sophomore defensive end Tyquan Lewis (59) drags down Maryland redshirt junior quarterback Perry Hills on Oct. 10. OSU won 49-28. Credit: Samantha Hollingshead / Photo EditorOhio State started slow once again but scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to put away the Maryland Terrapins, 49-28, in Columbus.Maryland’s offense, after getting shut out at home the previous week to a streaking Michigan team, got on the board first after redshirt junior quarterback Perry Hills fired a 52-yard touchdown pass. The Buckeye defense, which had bailed the team out from several close calls already this season, gave up a season-high 28 points, as well as 386 yards of offense. The Terps put up a valiant effort throughout the game, going so far as to even the score at 21 in the third quarter before the cracks began to widen. Two key interceptions in the fourth quarter helped end a potential comeback from Maryland, which leads the nation in interceptions thrown.Despite defensive struggles, the biggest takeaway from Saturday’s game was the OSU offense, which in the second half finally began to play to its potential. OSU coach Urban Meyer used redshirt junior quarterback Cardale Jones to start drives and let redshirt sophomore J.T. Barrett finish them inside the red zone. This system proved effective, as both quarterbacks looked sharp throughout most of the game. Jones completed 75 percent of his passes (21-of-28) for 291 yards and two touchdowns, while Barrett added three rushing touchdowns and 62 yards on the ground to help lead the Buckeye offense to an impressive 499 yards of total offense and 31 first downs.Junior running back Ezekiel Elliott pounded away 106 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries to lead the rushing attack, while redshirt senior H-back Braxton Miller (79 yards, one touchdown), redshirt sophomore H-back Jalin Marshall (78 yards, one touchdown) and redshirt junior receiver Michael Thomas (107 yards) put up impressive performances for the receiving corps. Redshirt junior safety Tyvis Powell and redshirt freshman defensive end Sam Hubbard both added interceptions for the defense.Maryland put up arguably its best game of the season in the loss, mostly thanks to its quarterback. Hills, after not playing for the last three weeks, put up 133 yards and a score through the air while rushing for 170 yards and two more touchdowns on the ground, as he was responsible for three of the four Maryland touchdowns. By the numbers:0: Arguably the most important number of all, as OSU’s offense didn’t have a turnover for the first time since facing off against Hawaii in Week 2.17: The number of interceptions thrown by Maryland quarterbacks this season, the most in the nation.2-0: OSU’s all-time record against Maryland.21: OSU’s margin of victory over the Terps, the same amount that Mid-American Conference team Bowling Green beat Maryland by earlier this season.11: Elliott has pounded away at least 100 yards for 11 consecutive games.26: OSU’s current regular-season conference winning streak, the longest in Big Ten history.-2: The Buckeyes’ current turnover margin for the season, as they have turned the ball over 13 times in six games compared to forcing 11 turnovers from opponents. 102: The numbers of weeks OSU has been ranked No. 1 in the AP poll after the Week 7 rankings were released on Sunday, which is the most of any college football team (Oklahoma is second at 101). read more
