30 April 2013 South Africa’s black middle class has more than doubled over the last eight years, growing from 1.7-million South Africans in 2004 to an estimated 4.2-million in 2012, according to new research by the UCT Unilever Institute of Strategic Marketing. The Unilever Institute’s latest study on South Africa’s black middle class, dubbed “4 Million and Rising”, has found that the annual spend of the country’s black middle class began pulling ahead of their white middle class counterparts in 2008, and has since skyrocketed to over R400-billion per annum. “Despite setbacks caused by the recent recession, South Africa’s black middle class continues to rapidly expand and is more influential and powerful than ever before,” Unilever Institute director John Simpson said in a statement on Sunday. “In contrast, the white middle class has remained fairly stagnant over same period, with its adult population growing from 2.8-million in 2004 to 3-million in 2012.”‘Crucial to the health of the economy’ Simpson, who led the “4 Million and Rising” study, said it was important for business and industry to better understand this market in order to facilitate the provision of goods and services to meet its needs. “That this market continues to grow and prosper is crucial to the health and future of the economy. The black middle class is helping create a vibrant and stable society by increasing South Africa’s skills base, deepening employment, and widening the tax net. “As this market has matured, it has become much more complex than marketers and advertisers have assumed,” Simpson said. “Marketers are not adjusting fast enough to meet the needs of this rapidly transforming market segment.” Simpson said that for marketers one of the most important changes in this market over the past decade related to connectivity. An estimated 95% of South Africa’s black middle class now own mobile phones, compared to 64% in 2004. Correspondingly, the advent of smartphones and increased internet access has seen internet usage quadrupling over this period. Changes in consumer behaviour The institutes researchers found radical changes in consumer behaviour over the past eight years, due in part to the intervening global recession and the enduring economic downturn, which had made getting a job harder than it was five years ago. “All these factors have led to a new financial conservatism, with respondents reporting that it is no longer ‘bling’ at all costs,” said Simpson. In contrast to the institute’s study of the black middle class in the early 2000s, which revealed rampant spending, the majority of participants in the latest study reported curbing their spending and only using credit when something was absolutely essential. Twenty-two percent of those surveyed admitted that they were struggling to manage their debt. The recent study also showed significant changes in consumers’ relationship with brands. While respondents in 2000 reported that brands helped to define their identity, this has shifted, with most of those surveyed now viewing brands as extensions of their identity. “This was the case across most product categories, except when it came to cars. For many in the black middle class, cars still embody status and are perceived as shorthand for social standing,” Simpson said. The full findings of the “4 Million and Rising” study will be released in early May. SAinfo reporter

Braving the chilly winter morning of December 26, a team of five-six staffers of the Forest Department who were on patrol duty intercepted a suspicious SUV approaching a buffer area in a corner of the Katarniaghat wildlife sanctuary.Despite the dense fog, the glowing headlights of the vehicle gave away its position. It was around 5.30 a.m. that the SUV was seized, more than 1.5 hours after it probably entered the sanctuary in Bahraich.A dead fowl, which was allegedly hunted, and hides of sambhar deer and boar, a .22 rifle, binoculars, range finders and other equipment were recovered from the vehicle, which had a Haryana number plate. Its owner, who turned out to be golfer Jyoti Randhawa, was arrested on charges of poaching and sent to jail. However, while Mr. Randhawa’s arrest brought focus on the vulnerable wildlife in one of the country’s richest belt of endangered species, this was not an isolated incident. Officials say it was a culmination of months of smart patrolling and strategy to nab poachers, as well as efforts to make forest officials more accountable through technology.Since June 2018, over 90 people have been arrested in Dudhwa for wildlife offences, including poaching and illegal felling, says Ramesh Pandey, field director of the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, under which the Katarniaghat sanctuary falls. In comparison, only 34 were arrested during the same period last year. While the increased figures could be interpreted as either better enforcement of law or actual rise in crime, Mr. Pandey attributes the results to equipping personnel with a mobile app, M-Stripe, used for surveillance and patrolling of tiger-populated areas.Built by the National Tiger Conservation Authority and the Wildlife Institute of India, the app has brought about a ‘big change’ in patrolling, says Mr. Pandey. The GPS-enabled M-Stripe, which stands for Monitoring System For Tigers-Intensive Protection and Ecological Status, allows patrol teams to keep a better tab on suspicious activity while also mapping their own patrolling, location, routes and timings for better accountability.Mr. Randhawa’s arrest is the “unexpected result of work done in the last six months,” says Mr. Pandey.“The patrolling team was out so early. I am sure the poaching would have gone unnoticed [had it not been for the changed patrolling measures],” says the field director. Using M-Stripe, forest officials in Dudhwa have conducted patrolling of over 90,000 km territory. “Fifty teams are operating with M-Stripe. Every night they send screenshots and photographs of their patrolling,” says Mr. Pandey.Spread in the Terai-belt of the Indo-Nepal border, across Lakhimpur Kheri and Bahraich districts, the DTR comprises three large forests: the Dudhwa National Park, Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary and the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary. The range is vulnerable to poaching owing to the porous international border and also due to the Terai topography, which gets flooded during monsoons. While poaching incidents involving high-profile accused have not been recorded here for over a decade, two types of wildlife crimes are still common: organised and unorganised.Hunting species like boars, deer or fish, fall under the second category, crimes “committed for bush meat,” while the organised crimes are much more serious involving wandering gangs and outsiders who come with the purpose of targeting “megafauna species like tigers and leopards,” says Mr. Pandey.Dudhwa is home to a number of wildlife species, including the Bengal Tiger, Gangetic dolphin, rhinoceros, leopard, hispid hare, sambhar, swamp deer, hog deer, cheetal, sloth beer, elephant and over 450 species of birds. While threats of poaching keep the officials on their toes, over the years the reserve has also witnessed increased cases of man-animal conflict adding to the threat to the wildlife, says Mohammad Ahsan, former chief principal forest conservator of Uttar Pradesh. While tigers or leopards have been reportedly lynched by locals after the animals intruded into their fields, the carnivores have also attacked and killed humans. As per the Wildlife Trust of India, a leading nature conservation organisation which works with the state wildlife department, around 180 cases of conflicts between humans and big cats (tigers, leopards) leading to human deaths and injuries have been recorded between 2000 to 2018 in and around the Dudhwa-Pilibhit Tiger landscape. Of these, 98 pertained to tigers.Since 2009, the WTI project team rescued eight tigers from 36 human-tiger conflict situations, with four tigers were successfully released back into the wild. We know there are two tough moments in sports, trading a player and when a player leaves in free agency. We all have to prepare ourselves for everything. So whether that’s tomorrow or four years from now, you never know. Raptors president Masai Ujiri, who is from Nigeria, says regardless of how the finals turn out, the trust built over the journey will be critical in Toronto’s chances of persuading Leonard to stay.“We’re going to be us,” Ujiri said. “Kawhi Leonard is a superstar and we’re going to treat him like a superstar, but we’re also going to do all the natural things I think will help us get to that level to convince Kawhi that this is the place for him.“The future conversations I’ve had with Kawhi are about the Golden State Warriors and that’s his mindset, what’s at hand right now, what’s the job right now. And the job right now is to beat the Golden State Warriors.”Ujiri realizes the deal must work for the club and Leonard, who has had to adjust to life in a new nation.“When he sees with the city, the fan base, basketball, coaching, everything almost has to come together naturally,” Ujiri said.ADVERTISEMENT “That’s the beauty of life. You just got to go out and enjoy every minute with the group of guys you got, because in professional sports nothing is ever guaranteed.” View comments
Photo Attribution: USATSIOklahoma State is the preseason pick to win the Big 12 for the first time ever.[1. OSU was picked third in 2011 when it won. OU first, A&M second.][breathes into brown paper bag]Ok, here’s a look at the voting (first place votes in parentheses):1. Oklahoma State (15) – 3652. Okahoma (8) – 3553. TCU (9) – 3474. Texas (8) – 3375. Baylor (2) – 2826. K-State (1) – 2407. Texas Tech – 1618. West Virginia – 1269. Iowa State – 9610. Kansas – 56I have pretty much zero confidence in any of the rankings other than Kansas finishing last, that’s it. Nobody else does either as you can tell with the top four teams being within 30 points of each other.[1. I actually think Baylor is going to finish in the top four.]As a contrast to this parity (or perceived parity) OU got 396 points last year, WVU got 339, and nobody else got over 300.[1. You get 10 points for a first place vote, nine for second…and so on. There are 43 voters so perfect score is 430.]I’ll probably put my preseason picks out next week (I know you’re on the edge of your seat) but I can’t really disagree with any of these. I don’t love TCU getting the second most first place votes, heck, I don’t love OSU getting nearly twice as many first place votes as any other team but I guess you have to give them to somebody. The OSU pick is fair, I guess (we still don’t “officially” have a quarterback) and you kind of knew it was coming, but it still doesn’t make me any less nervous.I’m surprised Texas wasn’t picked higher than 4th — not that they should be, just that the infatuation with the white and burnt orange seems to know no bounds, even those regarding not having a viable quarterback since Colt McCoy twisted up that shoulder in the Rose Bowl over three years ago.All things considered, a very fair poll.If you’re looking for the comments section, it has moved to our forum, The Chamber.
