‘He’s a goal machine’ – Ex-Manchester United attacker hails striker target

first_imgMickey Thomas has hailed Charlie Austin as a ‘goal machine’ as reports continue to gather pace that the Queens Park Rangers striker could move to Manchester United.Having already seen Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao leave Old Trafford this summer, United’s attacking resources were further depleted on Sunday night when Javier Hernandez left to sign for Bayer Leverkusen. That leaves Wayne Rooney as the only senior striker at the club, with youngster James Wilson as back-up, and fans are urging Louis van Gaal to go into the transfer market to sign a proven goalscorer.Monaco’s teenage forward Anthony Martial is being linked with a move, but Thomas believes Austin could provide the solution to the problem. The former Manchester United winger told Extra Time: “If Rooney gets injured, that’s a major problem [for United]. I’m sure he [Van Gaal] is on the look-out for another striker.“And Charlie Austin is an out-and-out striker. He’s a goal machine. Would he fit into Manchester United’s way of playing? I’m not so sure about that, but if he’s available why not get him on board?“It’s important they strengthen in that department with the Champions League to consider as well. Going into that with a thin squad is going to mean it will be very difficult to go far in that competition.“I’m sure Austin, if he’s on the radar and available, and maybe with no else being available, it might not be a bad decision to get him on board.“In terms of stature and name he doesn’t have that reputation [of someone like Falcao]. He’s not played at one of the biggest clubs. But everyone deserves an opportunity. He knows where the net is and, with the supply line at United, he might score the goals they need.”last_img read more
